It’s one of the great mad scientist origin stories in rock and roll history.
In 1976, Tom Scholz was an MIT grad working as a product design engineer at Polaroid. He was a technical wizkid, specializing in audio and tape recording technology, with nearly a dozen patents to his name. He was also just 29 years old. He hadn’t even picked up a guitar until his early-20s, after becoming obsessed with early British Invasion groups like the Kinks and the Yardbirds. He quickly became a self-taught multi-instrumentalist, gigging with bar bands in the Boston area, which led to him building a tiny studio in Watertown where he began relentlessly tinkering with ideas, re-recording tracks again and again in search of the “perfect” rock song. It became such a fixation that he used the money he’d saved for a down payment on a future house to purchase a professional 12-track tape recorder. It was all or nothing.
It’s remarkable that Scholz kept soldiering on in this way. For the previous five years, he’d made demo tape after demo tape supported by a band he’d been playing with locally, Mother’s Milk, and received one rejection letter after another. RCA, Capitol, Atlantic, Elektra, and Epic were among the labels that first passed on what Scholz was putting out into the universe, even though those tapes featured early iterations of several tracks that would make it onto Boston. Due to the lack of progress, Mother’s Milk supporting members came and went at various points, including singer Brad Delp, whose day job back then was as an assembly line worker at an electric coil factory. Eventually, Scholz was asked to audition for Epic with a full band, to prove that the mad scientist act would translate to live venues. And, even after they passed that, the label wanted the group to decamp to Los Angeles and record all their songs with a different producer.
Naturally, Scholz balked at this request and had producer John Boylan deploy as many smokescreens as possible to make the Epic brass think they were complying. In reality, except for “Let Me Take You Home Tonight,” which was recorded in Los Angeles as a decoy of sorts to appease CBS, Epic’s parent company, the vast majority of what you hear on this classic record, which turns 50 years old this week, was tracked on Scholz’s equipment, which was either consumer-grade or something he custom-built, in the same environment as the demo tapes. The biggest difference was Delp’s soaring vocals, which were overseen by Boylan and partially saved during the mixing process, during which Scholz kept pushing the guitar much higher in the mix than anything else. After all that effort and painstaking attention to detail, it looked like everyone’s life would more or less return to normal.
Here’s Scholz on the moment that all changed for him, via a 2024 interview he did with the MIT Technology Review:
“Honestly, I thought the recording I made in 1976 was going to be forgotten by the beginning of 1977,” he says. He was just hoping to get the song on the radio so he could get gigs in local clubs with a song people recognized. “I actually didn’t realize there was anything serious happening with my album until I was working in my back room [at Polaroid]—I had a secret back room, sort of like a boiler room, in the bowels of the building in Tech Square—and somebody comes running and says, ‘Hey! Your song’s playing in the drafting department!’”
I’ve seen Boston’s music, and specifically the songs that make up this tracklist, described as some version of dead-eyed “corporate rock,” even though the nuts and bolts it uses to build out its sound have little to nothing to do with the low-hanging rock clichés from the mid-1970s. In the Rolling Stone album guide, “More Than a Feeling” was touted as the hit that “ushered in the long, cold winter of arena rock; Boston’s soaring combination of high-tech metal guitar punch and smooth pop vocal hooks quickly became the cornerstone of Album Oriented Radio.” Perhaps that’s true on some level, but it also shortchanges the incredible heft of Delp’s lead vocal, which showcases his four-octave range to devastating effect, particularly on the final bridge. I remember getting shivers hearing him hit those notes when I first discovered the album in my early teens. It’s also a production marvel, featuring skull-rattling guitar work that knows exactly when to lean in and when to pull back.
That calibration runs through the rest of the LP’s first side, even as the songs get progressively stranger. “Peace of Mind” features acoustic guitar playing that slices through the rest of the heaviest arrangement on the album, giving it genuine levity. “Foreplay/Longtime” is the oldest Scholz composition on the record (he started writing it in 1969 while still at MIT) and definitely the most out-there. The chaotic first three minutes mimic the exhilaration that bubbles quicker and quicker in the former scenario described in the title, while the vocal harmonies give the post-coital second half an unexpectedly poignant quality. I’m not sure it’s meant to, but again, how can the human spirit have any other emotional reaction to Delp’s singing? Elsewhere, you have some bar band throwback energy (”Smokin’”), proto-power pop (”Something About You”), and a gorgeous moment in “Hitch a Ride,” which includes an intro so understated but precise that it threatens to take your breath away.
In case you didn’t know, Boston was an absolute commercial monster. It peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and remained on the chart for over 130 weeks. It sold two million copies by January 1977, then one of the fastest-selling debuts in American rock history. The album also held the title of best-selling US debut ever until Guns N’ Roses’ Appetite for Destruction arrived in 1987. Now certified 17 times Platinum, it’s one of the most popular records of its era, despite not getting a ton of critical respect. Its only Grammy nomination was for Best New Artist, a distinction it lost to (checks notes and shudders) the Starland Vocal Band. That’s right: the “Afternoon Delight” guys. Seriously. That happened. Also, I want to pause and acknowledge that song as one of the worst songs about having sex ever written. It’s not titillating, it’s not even entertaining. The fact that the Academy voters decided that this folks would have a more impactful future than Boston is just inconceivable. Anyway, I digress.
Fun fact: This was Boston’s peak as a band, too. They became the first act to make their New York City debut at Madison Square Garden and toured successfully for many years after that, but their studio material took a serious quality dip soon after their debut album. 1978’s Don’t Look Back tried to run the formula back for a direct sequel with uneven results, while 1986’s Third Stage downshifts into full-on schmaltz mode. Delp died by suicide in 2007 and, after multiple comeback attempts with different lineups, the group hasn’t toured since 2017. But this album’s commercial performance meant Scholz did more than alright for himself. He used the proceeds to found Scholz Research & Development, the entity through which he commercialized his recording inventions and helped shape the guitar sound of 1980s rock production. Once a tinkerer, always a tinkerer.
