Hello! 😊👋
Welcome to a new edition of the Daily Music Picks newsletter!
Today’s music pick is the sophomore release from a polarizing hyperpop duo that’s as entertaining as it is gonzo.
Genre: Hyperpop, Pop-Punk
Label: Atlantic
Release Date: March 17, 2023
Vibe: 😵💫
There’s committing to the bit, and then there’s what 100 gecs, the hyperpop duo consisting of Dylan Brady and Laura Les, accomplish on their sophomore LP, 10,000 gecs. Despite clocking in just short of a half-hour, a lot of ground is covered here. No joke is too over-the-top, and no stylistic mashup is too jarring as they draw on inspiration from pop-punk and nu-metal in the vein of a Limp Bizkit or Sum 41, all while instrumental distortion (particularly on the low end of things) right up to or slightly past the breaking point. In other words, it’s a lot for your ears and brain to sort through.
And yet, it’s never anything less than breathlessly entertaining. There’s nothing subtle about the “how” and “why” here, but that’s clearly not the point either. At points, the transitions and genre changeups happen so quickly that I had to drag my thumb back across the streaming timeline, needing a second to account for what just happened. And 100 gecs scarcely take a moment to exhale and wait for you to catch up, which is part of the charm here. It’s a goofy party record that, through its sheer lack of shame, pushes itself past the incredulous and into a frenzied fun zone.
