If nothing else, it’s clear that Indigo de Souza, the 25-year-old from Ashville, North Carolina, is going for it. It builds on the most memorable moments from her previous full-length effort, Any Shape You Take, and crafts songs that are both deeply personal, with lyrics that wade through pain and trauma, and so slick and catchy you can picture them galvanizing a crowd from atop a festival stage. The result is an album that echoes pop-punk and indie darlings like No Doubt and Hole, balancing viciousness with hopefulness, cynicism with glimmers of real hope.
Much of the first half of this record comes at you like a sonic buzzsaw, grappling with bad breakups (”You Can Be Mean”) and the nihilism that comes with getting older (”Parking Lot”). But, pivoting at the title track, the second half eases into a milder, more pensive emotional place. There’s still dissatisfaction every almost every corner (from “Always,” concerning absenteeism: “Father, I thought you'd be here/I thought you'd try/I thought you'd stay), but it’s tinged with some really beautiful string and horn arrangements that ensure the experience never feels one-note.
All of This Will End will surely be a stepping stone for de Souza, who is officially a creative voice to watch.
