It’s likely not many music fans have heard of Nigerian-born, Canada-based DJ-turned-electronic-maven Debby Friday. Her first full-length effort, GOOD LUCK, will almost certainly change that.
Brimming with confidence and intensity, this album comes at you fast with chest-thumping beats and a sly, warped vocal delivery that reminded me of Trent Reznor and M.I.A. Pulling as much from industrial and goth as she does from big, booming bass house cuts, the influences come together in interesting, unexpected ways. Consider the opening guitar strains of a track like “WHAT A MAN,” which sounds like a plane taxiing on the runway before skidding to a screeching halt to let the bassline come in. Friday’s incisive opening lines betray a certain vulnerability, which adds depth to a piece that could’ve stayed one note: "I had a man, he loved me so/His heart was small, it wouldn't grow/I loved a man, I loved him well/My love was strong, he couldn't tell.”
Is it the most innovative electronic record you’ll hear this year? Probably not. But there’s something to be said for execution that drips with swagger and potential, and Debby Friday has both in spades.
