If God Don’t Make Mistakes was Conway the Machine’s breakthrough into the conversation of most talented rappers in the game, his follow-up, Won’t He Do It, announces he’s here to stay. Dripping with swagger and the kind of effortlessly luxurious that would make Rick Ross blush, the Buffalo native moves away from the darker, horrorcore-adjacent atmospherics at the exact right moment in his career. Instead, he’s focused on letting you know how much of a boss he is, whether that’s detailing his rise from “[residue] in the pots and pans to tropical sands” on “Brucifix” or his ode to one-percenter weed experiences on “Monogram.”
That doesn’t mean fans of his aren’t in for at least some grimy bars, however. Standout “Stab Out,” which sees Conway flanked by another heavy-hitter in Ransom, is one of the sharpest tracks he’s ever delivered, while the closer “Super Bowl” is a trap flex session with Juicy J. The best moments here are when our protagonist steps completely out of his supposed comfort zone and maximizes the soulfulness of the track. He’s supported by excellent production work throughout, particularly on a cut like “The Chosen,” which sounds like an Isaac Hayes/Stax outtake that fits him incredibly well.
Any conversations about Conway “selling out” here are just noise. Pay them no mind. This is an excellent rap record.
