I don’t really seek out DJ sets as a paying customer that often. I don’t dislike them, don’t get me wrong, but I don’t find myself regularly enthralled by them, either. Chalk it up to the period of my life where I spent nearly 15 years as a working DJ for bars, clubs, and private events, playing a lot of the same top-drawer crowd-pleasers over and over and over again. It was a lot of fun for a long time, but, like anything else, it became a job and, more than that, a bit of a grind. 12- to 14-hour days where you have to be “on” all the time take a toll on your body, let’s put it that way. By the time I played my ~~most recent~~ last gig in 2022, I had lost interest, and that feeling extends, however rightly or wrongly, to seeing other DJs perform live. I know too much about how the sausage is made (building a setlist, setting and then changing the order or transitions based on crowd reactions, and so on) that I find myself focusing on everything but the music.

An exception to this pattern was seeing DJ Shadow perform most of his popular tracks, including highlights from Endtroducing…., his full-length debut, and a sampling junkie’s wet dream, live at a venue that suited his sensibilities perfectly. Craggly lasers in appropriately 90s-era shades of green and icy blue danced across the columns and ceilings of the brutalist-leaning interior while the highs and mids slinked out of the speaker system with precision and authority. I have a clear memory of the opening riff from “Organ Donor” leaving the entire room in this trance-like state. People were dancing, but also somehow moving as one, each person an extension of the stranger standing next to them in the dark. Shortly after he played that song, he got on the mic and let everyone know how appreciative he was of the turnout and the response. How deeply it touched him that people still cared about what he was putting out into the world. As a former DJ, the exchange touched me, too.

Given that context, Endtroducing is one of the first albums I recommend to rebut this outdated notion that sampling-based music, especially in a (let’s face it) predominantly non-white genre like hip-hop, is “not real music.” What DJ Shadow accomplishes with this tracklist is nothing short of extraordinary, sculpting and arranging thousands of tiny, mostly anonymous sound fragments with the care and rigor that a conductor might manipulate their orchestra. Putting the pieces in the right sequence or layers is one thing, but wringing this level of cinematic heft out of them is quite another. The fact that his album was made pre-internet and pre-streaming, using basically turntables and an Akai MPC-60 MKII sequencer/sampler, makes the depth of its textures and the seductive nature of its moods all the more impressive.

“It was all about chopping to me. I never had the luxury of taking extended samples. There are lots of overdubs on the album, as well. But all the record was 100% sample – or vinyl-based. All the sampling was done on the MPC. It all went straight from turntable to the MPC to tape. And any other things you hear were done straight off the turntable, pitched in. Like, if a song is in a certain key, and I overdub a string bit, I have to manipulate the pitch control on the turntable until it works.”

Not easy to pull off, even in a relatively simplified form like that.

In a great 2012 interview with NPR, he expanded on his sampling process and mentality:

“I call it a collage […] I think that’s the best way to explain it. It’s taking little pieces from here, adding it to little pieces from there—as many different disparate elements as you can find—and making something totally new out of it. Literally down to, not just the drums from one record, but the snare from one record, the kick from another record, the bass line or part of a bass line from another record, putting it all together. That’s one hurdle. But then, actually having it articulate something and channel my inspiration through it—to be able to tell a story in that way is the second hurdle. Just throwing a bunch of things together may not be very interesting.”

Shadown, born Josh Davis, built this tracklist over two or so years with the consummate crate digger’s ear for the most minute, often obscure sonic details. As he bounced from a home setup to professional studio time, his setup stayed relatively minimal by design. Most of the cutting and layering you hear was done with turntables and an Akai MPC60 Mark II, routed through a tape recorder. Even in the early-90s, it was a no-frills way to make a hip-hop record, which, in a strange way, has helped it age better than some of the bigger-budget productions of the era. It’s a deliberately gritty, grimy aesthetic that you can’t fake, or at least couldn’t fake as well back then. At the time, most rap fans were gravitating toward bigger, increasingly smoother production, yet Endtroducing is one of those brilliant little anomalies that become transcendent precisely because of how anachronistic it is. Years of thumbing through bins and bins of vinyl in his native Sacramento paid off in a major way.

At this point in the review, I would normally throw out a handful of highlights in the hopes that, even if you don’t get through the entire album, you can at least sample some of its greatness via a quick playlist queue add. That routine would do this record a disservice, however, because it rewards active, not passive listening. I could rattle off the tracks with the most recognizable samples to help you connect the dots and appreciate everything that’s going on under the surface, but there are simply too many to catalog in a concise manner. You’re better off making this a multi-tab listening experience in your browser, with the sample credits open alongside the LP and, if you feel so inclined, a visualization or two of how masterful its assembly is from top to bottom. What’s striking song to song is its unwavering, almost fragile beauty, from the rain-pattering piano on “Building Steam with a Grain of Salt” to the reanimated orchestral flourishes of “Stem / Long Stem.” Even the angrier, turmoil-laden cuts, like “Mutual Slump,” reach a certain level of emotional vulnerability that’s difficult to shake.

The album’s initial US audience was modest by today’s standards. It peaked at No. 37 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart despite being near-universally revered by critics, including Robert Christgau. In the UK, a region where Shadow had already made a name for himself, the project cracked the Top 20 of the album chart there, eventually earning him a Gold certification from the BPI. Its popularity led to Endtroducing spinning off four singles, an unheard of number for an instrumental hip-hop album. Mo’ Wax’s reputation, which had amplified Shadow’s work previously, deserves a good chunk of the credit, but its staying power extends far beyond that first brush with success. Music publications of greater import than this one, like Pitchfork and Spin, have all placed it among the defining albums of the 1990s, which means I guess I’m not alone in that assessment. This was never really a hip-hop record defined by the absence of a rapper, a framing device that many kept reaching for 30-plus years ago. Instead, it’s a collage (see, that word again) built to cover the walls, the ceiling, and every inch of the landscape that it touches.

Bonus points if it gives you goosebumps.
