Like Illmatic and Ready to Die, two genre touchstones that dropped the following year, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) has become more than a transcendent debut album. It’s a technical and stylistic achievement that gave East Coast hip-hop its sonic identity. Accents like ghostly piano chords and snippets from RZA’s favorite kung-fu flicks mesh perfectly with the gritty, lo-fi beats to give every track an undeniably cinematic quality, making you forget this record was recorded quickly, on the cheap, in a battle-rap environment that was borne out of necessity. But, despite its left-field studio approach, everything about 36 Chambers feels deliberate and strategic, an incredible achievement considering the album features nine rappers who all get moments to shine.
The benefit of hindsight makes this tracklist read like a murderer’s row of star-making performances. There’s Ghostface Killa’s opening verse on “Bring Da Ruckus,” blindsiding the listener with a flow that changed the genre overnight (" I come rough, tough like an elephant tusk/Your head rush, fly like Egyptian musk”). There’s Method Man’s masterful eponymous track, summing up his legacy in a couple of hilarious bars (" Style'll hit ya, wham, then goddamn/You'll be like,' Oh s***, that's the jam’). There’s the underrated poignancy of “Tearz” and the uninhibited machismo of “Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthing ta F*** Wit.” And, of course, there’s the timeless eeriness of “C.R.E.A.M,” featuring one of hip-hop’s most recognizable dissertations on drugs and violence.
For me, the most vital moments are the posse cuts, primarily “Protect Ya Neck.” The way each performer carves out ample space to spit intense, attention-grabbing rhymes, all without overstaying their welcome or ruining the song’s momentum, is something to behold. A stroke of genius that, like the album as a whole, has been imitated countless times but never replicated.
