Huge fan of The Sugarcubes! I definitely have Debut and Post in my collection. For whatever reason, I lost track and didn’t keep up with her. It’s been on my list to go listen to the albums I haven’t heard. I have only listened to Homogenic and Vespertine once. Seeing the ranking you have, I’ve got some listening to do!

Excited to hear your thoughts post-listens. Thanks!

Before settling down to read this I thought I’d choose one of her albums to listen while I read - chose Vespertine if you can believe it! As long as her voice can give me goosebumps (looking at you Pagan Poetry) that’ll be the era!

An excellent choice as musical tone-setter. 😊

So happy to see you rank my favorite musician's albums! Although my list would look slightly different — 'Homogenic' at the top, 'Biophilia' at the very bottom — your ranking overall does Björk tremendous justice. I especially appreciate you calling out "Jóga," my favorite song of hers.

I also have a *lot* to say about her music videos if you ever wanna collaborate on writing about those; you and i both wrote about her in our first week on Substack! https://lavendersound.substack.com/p/bjork-hit-the-reset-button-10-years

Reading your work here was a great way to start my morning ✨

Thanks so much!! 😊

Great list, Matt. I think I’d have a very similar ranking - maybe shuffling around 2-4, depending on the mood - but you nailed it.

Thanks Marty! 🙏😊

Really well done, Matt, and I think the only change I would make to reflect my experience would be to swap Vulnicura and Debut. As for eras, that run from Debut to Medulla is a wonder.

Thanks Jeremy!

Stupendous! I love everything about this, and frankly I'd rank them all as 1A, but I love your analysis! Just curious, if it counted, where would you rank Selmasongs?

Also, I admit, my favorite Björk track is maybe "Amphibian" but it's not on any of her albums? :(

Sugarcubes were legendary to me, for me Debut will always be my number one but I can see where you are with these for sure.

Debut is my sentimental favorite. Was the first record of hers I ever heard and still holds a special place in my heart. Thanks Jon!

Have to say I almost punched the air in triumph when I saw your top choice. Certainly deserves more plaudits that album. Unison is a glorious closer.

Matt Fish's avatar

Yes and yes! Thanks for reading and commenting Edwin 😊

Homogenic has to be number one.

So close and yet so far apparently, haha

Ohhh this whole article gave me goosebumps!!! Tons of memories from undergrad like getting to see her in 1995 where I got to hear debut and post live and Tina and David from TH were right next to me!!!! I remember now I twisted my hair like hers and wore this awesome red ringer and glitter tee that my most sweet friend let me borrow for the show… so visceral and beautiful… I could hardly dance tho I was just standing in the ballroom gently crying !! Her voice is so moving. Your article just unlocked another core memory from so long ago but your writing made me feel like I was right back in nyc on that cold night. Namaste namaste for this💖❤️🤗🍀🌷🦋🥰

Thank you so much, Allie! I'm thrilled that the piece transported you back to such a vivid point in life. Must've been amazing to see her live.

Also, as an aside to the other writers out there (some of whom have been on the complain train recently about "making it" in the Notes feed), it's comments like this that are the primary reason why I do this newsletter. Not money or fame or fortune. If I have but one interaction like this, I know I'm doing my job well enough to review at least a few more records.

I agree with you wholeheartedly 🙌

Appreciate the list and additional insight, which will make me reconsider & re-listen to some of these but … Post is #1.

She’s got such an outlier sound that somehow fits everywhere. I’ve used her music endlessly in DJ sets for years 🔥

Matt Fish's avatar

Oh wow! Which songs are the most popular in that use case?

Zach Wiles's avatar

Hunter is the perennial favorite. She also goes super well against Massive Attack tunes as well!

Love that <3
