Fusion era Miles has always been my jam, and the quintet era that preceded it was awesome. Seven Steps To Heaven has been a staple of mine for years. Funny thing is, Kind Of Blue is probably my least favorite of his stuff from the time before that, where I prefer Sketches of Spain.
"In a Silent Way" was one of my first Jazz records- I recorded it on cassette from an LP my guitar teacher loaned me, along with "Bright Size Life" on side two. Still two of my favorite albums of all time.
I used to play it for my Dead Head friends and tell them this is what the Grateful Dead are TRYING to do. In his autobiography Phil Lesh talks about seeing Miles's electric band live and pretty much quotes me verbatim.
!h introductioI to Jazz was Kind of Blue, its good but I love Bitches Brew. I don't know Jazz but I love that album! It is crazy like nothing I have heard before. I don't know all these albums and I'm looking forward to checking them all out.
Keeping this in my Jazz file for quick reference. My obsession is with the last few Prestige LPs: Steamin' with; Relaxing with; Working with... the Miles Davis Quintet. I've got 4 so far and listen to them regularly. The later Miles' Blue Note; Columbia; break new ground but after all that I prefer tonal over modal. JAZZ is whatever IT is for you! Great article. You got your finger the pulse. Music is in the doldrums because the drummers have been neutered and the search for $'s has become the obsession now. It's over so might as well enjoy the pursuit of sound as a end and not a means.
