Nice piece on what this proghead thinks is Rush's last great album. Never knew "Spirit of Radio" had a specific station in mind. Like "YYZ" was a specific airport, I suppose.
I had always figured "Free Will". was more objectivist b*******, as I focused on that "kindness that can kill" line.
But no question that the "Genetic blends" part of it is awesome--and not just 'cause of Geddy's supernal siren.
Ah, you know. It's got a pretty great cover, and it was the tour I saw them off, the one time I did. I like "YYZ." I like "Witch Hunt." In fact, I like every song in the 'Fear' trilogy, so I even find Grace Under Pressure not without some merit.
No, if there was an "I'm out" moment, it was "Time Stand Still."
Not so crazy about "Red Barchetta" or "Tom Sawyer," but Moving Pictures was a decent rock album--one I just don't happen to own. It did mark the beginning of a period of decline, I think it's fair to say that. And I think it's fair to say that at a certain point, Rush decided to cut back on the virtuosity and the vision, and lay on the faddish sounds and forms that might make them more popular.
That certain point was Moving Pictures--but it really shouldn't be blamed for what followed.
Fair points across the board. I'm a defender of Rush's synth-heavy era, mostly because I just like that 80s aesthetic generally, but I can understand why it's perceived as a drop-off in a lot of cases.
My first Rush LP — and still my favorite!
What a way to start!! Thanks Dan :)
So glad I was able to see them live several times!!
Woooooooo

Thanks for commenting! So you’re out on Moving Pictures?

Never liked them, all their music sounds the same!
Interesting take, I’ve legitimately never heard anyone say that of Rush. Appreciate it!
