While Summer Nights is a college bar favorite (the guy-girl lines are so easy and fun to sing), “There Are Worse Things I Could Do” and “Look At Me I’m Sandra Dee” were my favorites. One reflecting on the “bad girl” high school rep and the other mocking women for being too goodie goodie. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t.

Great point, Thea, there’s definitely some fascinating throughlines that hold a mirror up to some more “traditional” feminine tropes. I’ve always thought the movie was smarter than it gets credit for on a few thematic levels. PS: I used to sing “Hopelessly Devoted” at karaoke all the time. More people than you’d think found it amusing.

My daughter loved this flick and that song in particular so yeah heard ot a lot, I lived near Vinnie Barbarino in Tenafly on the border of Sugar Hill (Englewood Cliffs) growing up in suburban New Jersey. See my Wilson Pickett / Bobby Hebb pod for context.
