Hi friends,
No music post today. Instead, I wanted to share a quick Summer programming update that will go into effect as of Monday, June 2.
Slowly but surely, I’ve been stockpiling album reviews of some of my favorites that I somehow haven’t managed to cover in the almost two years I’ve been writing this newsletter.
Why? Because I wanted to change it up next month and devote the entire month of June exclusively to classic record reviews. Some are oldies, others are more recent releases that have already demonstrated their cultural transcendence. A handful are celebrating milestone anniversaries. I’m excited to dig into these LPs—all of which have shaped me as a music fan in so many ways.
After that, I’ll undertake another first for this newsletter: taking some time off from music writing. Earlier this year, I mentioned I’d be devoting more bandwidth to non-Substack writing projects, and in July and August, I may tinker with those. I can’t help myself. However, even with that, I’ll also be putting my feet up and, for the first time in nearly 24 months, taking a sustained creative vacation.
This newsletter will return to its regular, twice-weekly publishing schedule on August 25 to celebrate my most anticipated album anniversary of 2025. Can you guess what it is? I’ll give you a hint: the LP in question is turning 50 (!).
I hope you’ll stick around until then. As always, thank you for your continued support. It’s played an integral part in growing what’s become a fantastic community of talented writers and wise music nerds here on Substack.
If you haven’t subscribed but want to, feel free to leave your info here:
Wishing you nothing but the best this summer.
Cheers,
M
The Gold Standard of reviewers.
BITCHES BREW VINYL 2LPs revisited has changed the way I look at music history. My latest revelation: Miles was Miles Ahead, therefore embracing this new style (post-modal? Fusion before fusion?) I listened last night to my 10" Miles Blue Note vinyl "Everytime We Say Goodbye" Cole Porter. I got one thing clearly like never before: Miles imbued everything he did with such musical integrity. Such as we had never seen before and haven't since. Integrity gives one the latitude to go where others fear to or fail to because it's still at its base Music capital M. Not purely experiment that takes chances.
