Great read. I saw Kamasi around the release of that album and was shocked at how far back his relationships with band mates went. A bunch of childhood friends still motivated by the same goal. Pretty awesome.
I saw Kamasi live last year, and it was an incredible, deeply profound, and moving musical experience. Even my wife, who isn't a huge fan of jazz, was blown away. It made me wonder what it must have been like to have seen Coltrane, Pharaoh, or Yusef in the late '60s and for Sanders and Lateef, into the early '70s.
Listening now... "Final Thought" gonna be a good day at work thanks to your push. Brings me back and forward like only jazz can. Check out my The Day I Played All Blues with Albert Dailey post. I digitized his lost album "Renaissance" at the end by this jazz piano visionary who left us too young. KW takes this bend in the road a bit farther up the road. The vocals reminded me of this. Diving deeply into my new Bitches Brew 2 LPs too thanks to you. New ways to listen to old things. Joy only music can bring. https://open.substack.com/pub/stevegabe/p/the-day-i-played-all-blues-w-albert?r=14weym&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=false
I love Kamasi, he had such a big personal influence on some of my current favorite artists it is actually insane.
