I properly discovered Prince in the 90's, it was Diamonds and Pearl tour that I first saw him live, I was 16 or 17? I went to early stuff from there but always had a soft spot for his first Love Symbol album with Sexy MF, which just gave me a taste of jazz but not too jazzy, a taste of soul but not too soulful. He is a cross genre master and I loved all of it. I last saw him when I was very pregnant, 13 years ago, and I'm so glad I did. That was when I really loved the early stuff, Alphabet St, Paisley Park, Sign o the times. I'll listen to Gold Epxerience, because why not?!
Funny that I come across this piece now, I had 'Gold' in my head over the weekend for some reason.
I love this record. Early to mid-90s Prince is my favorite period, but that might have something to do with Diamonds & Pearls being one of the first albums I ever really got into at that age. Gold Experience is great as a concept record, but there's so many great moods on it and even the songs that aren't as good are still really good. I think Come is misunderstood though, that album has a lot of great jams on it (the title track and Dark especially) and the horn work is some of the best he ever had on record.
I appreciate all the eras of Prince’s career, even the 21st century stuff. The triple album Emancipation gets ripped to shreds as being bloated, but it’s probably the one I return to most. I also return to The Gold Experience regularly as well. You illustrate the albums brilliance perfectly in your reflections. Like the first symbol record, which I love almost as much as this one, Prince has assembled a killer band, and these albums rock harder than anything else in his catalog IMO. Billy Jack Bitch is one of his best dance-floor bangers. And Eye Hate U might be my favorite of his many perfect slow jams.
“1958-1993” Turns out he was twenty-three years too early...
This is the true Rubicon of his career- there is the "Prince" era material (1979-1993) and then the "artist formerly known as" era after that (1993-2016). I gravitate to the former era, and probably many of his fans still do.
It astounds me that there is still material he made on tape that hasn't been released yet- it almost seems like he lived in his recording studio...

Wow, incredible memories I’m sure. :) Thanks Nat!
Loved reading this! I’m way more of an ‘80s Prince person but will be spinning this album tomorrow to see if it sways me.
Amazing! Thanks for reading.

That early-90s stretch is really something when you look at it in the macro. Thanks for reading!

An absolute virtuoso that’s for sure. Thanks David!
