One of the greatest albums of all time, IMO. The raw emotion expressed in every piano pluck, every whisper and cry, every snare hit from Matt Chamberlain, Brion’s perfect production (though I know some who think he overproduced it). It’s one I return to more than any other. Great write up, Matt.
Fantastic analysis of an album that, despite its waves of emotion, remains relevant to my current (much calmer) internal world, with all the wisdom of 20-odd years of adult tragedies and triumphs.
Yet somehow, it still feels like my first (solo) apartment: a declaration of independence and authenticity, built on sacrifice and discomfort, but REAL, and entirely mine.
It nice to read that it still hits others this way too
Extraordinary album, really well reviewed here. I recall the recognition that Apple was delivering emotions that I’d simply never felt myself (thank goodness), but which I could understand much better thanks to her. The weirdness, the playfulness, but most of all the anger were and remain palpable. It’s playing for the first time in about 6 months as I type, so thanks for prompting!

Not a bad backing group at all...would be interested in following them up...
Shame about the singer's monotone vocals though...talk about grate...
This album has something like twenty planets inside of it. Probably my favorite of Apple's work, but wow, so many highlights, no lowlights.
Favorite Apple track? "Slow Like Honey" from "Tidal" is probably the best song that makes me want to light a cigarette.
