Reading your take on The Who’s varied and yet short discography will be a treat, Matt. ‘Who Are You’ is the subject of my next post - an incomplete look at the new boxed set.

I might - might - write a series on Genesis next year. A little relieved to see they didn’t make the cut for you!

Thanks Ian! I’m looking forward to your reaction for the Who discog ranking when it’s released.

I would ask if your willing to include the live albums in your ranking. Live at the Isle of Wight and Live at Leeds both get mentioned as some of the greatest live albums ever!

It’s a good question. Usually I don’t, but I’d consider making an exception for those honorable mentions. :)

I think they are both great albums and important to having a full picture of the band.

You cannot go wrong with any of these.

Covering the Beatles is a tall order! It will be fun though. I think I'm most interested in hearing about Queen.

Thanks Dan!

This is a great choice. As a music fan seeing how smaller groups evolved because of these bigger icons always fascinated me.

This is nice, but there are lesser-known artists also worthy of this treatment- but I guess that will have to wait until 2027...

I don’t disagree with you, and several of those names were mentioned by a handful of voters. Not enough to supplant the big dogs, in the end.

NickS (WA)'s avatar

The format makes it hard for a write-in to claim a top-spot. When I voted I just picked from the available choice but, about a day later thought I should have considered the write-ins more seriously.

What would those have been?

NickS (WA)'s avatar

That's a good question. Thinking about it, the people I would think of first have too many albums (say Elvis Costello) that would be tedious to do a full list. You did a good job of picking bands that are influential but don't have overly extensive catalogs.

I'd definitely think about Joni Mitchell or Leonard Cohen.

Thinking about bands, my best suggestion would be Radiohead (which is not a band that I know much about, but I really enjoy your "best albums" series as a way to learn about bands that I'm unfamiliar with).

Radiohead is a good pick, for sure. Joni is one of my all-time favs. So much exceptional music to cover!

Someone else who would be fascinating (but probably not worth the effort) is Paul Simon. 15 studio albums over 58 years covers a wide range of styles.
